Scientists from Caltech to develop a small-sized imager teraherzt cheap. In smartphones, embedded chips that produce and emit terahertz waves.
Type these waves can penetrate a material, such as walls, without causing damage. When combined on a handheld device, this technology can be used for various purposes.
"Utilizing an inexpensive integrated circuit technology, the same used to make microchips in mobile phones, we make silicon chips that could operate almost 300 times their speed. Chip enables the latest generation sensors are versatile," said Professor Ali Hajimiri.
According to the developers, as we quoted from TG Daily, Friday (14/12/2012), terahertz wave technology can be used for security, wireless communication to gaming touchless.
With the help of IBM, a team at Caltech has been able to use standard CMOS technology. This technology ultimately used to design sillicon chips that operate at terahertz frequencies.
Terahertz scanning is actually not something new. This technology is already used by New York police, NYPD. For example, it is used to detect the presence of weapons. However, most existing systems involving laser size, expensive and often require very low temperatures.
The researchers claim to have succeeded in using this technology to find a razor blade hidden in a piece of plastic.
