Seoul - Samsung seems to want to reduce dependence on the mobile phone camera sensor components Sony. South Korean vendors are turning to companies compatriot, SK hynix.
"Because the camera on a mobile device becomes an important feature, we bought more backside illuminated sensor (BSI) from SK hynik because their prices are good," said a Samsung official quoted by the Korea Times and quoted us, Monday (22/10/2012).
SK hynix itself to compete with Samsung as a manufacturer of memory chips. So the relationship is quite unique.
Sony itself is a large BSI sensor providers in the mobile industry. However, vendors such as Samsung and Apple began to worry Sony is not able to keep up demand.
"We're still buying billions of dollars sensor from Sony. Yet we also increase the supply of SK hynix BSI significantly," said the unnamed official.
SK hynik provide sensors used in Samsung's 5-megapixel camera. The sensor is installed in the model output Samsung smartphone middle class.
